- Edge Treatment -
If you have a laminent bass you'll need to keep the edges sealed. If moisture permeates the top or back and delamination begins there is no way to repair it short of replacing the top or back. I have yet to work on a laminent bass that's value would exceed the cost of that repair. If you care about your laminent bass, you should make sure you keep up with your edges as they get worn out.
Even if it's a solid top and back, age and wear may warrant having the edges treated. From the potential for the spread of cracks, to snagging edges on carpeting, down to just plain looks - all good reasons to have an edge treatment done. I seal with a special violin varnish I use mostly for this purpose. Shown is a 50 year old Voit & Geiger "Pancake" bass made by the Wilfer family. The custom bumpers were also installed by me. I can add bumpers to your bass too, just ask!
